Bengali weddings too are pompous, adorned and hold lots of values and tradition. But of course, with all the glitz and glamour associated with a Bengali wedding, there have been a few famous Bengali weddings that I am sure many remember and talked about for other reasons.It may also be remembered that Tollywood actress Koel Mallick also entered the seventh wedlock of marriage attire that was quite remarkable. Given her humble approach to fashion, Koel’s wedding to businessman Nispal Singh was a much talked about occasion. It did so but it made headlines for the excessive level of hype it received from the media. That day saw a lot of intrusion of privacy during the ceremony that photographers and journalists stormed the venue to cover the event, with scuffles between security and media.One more mention worthy of notice is the wedding of film director Srijit Mukherji and Mithila Maikap, the singer. What was intended to be a regular cross-cultural wedding quickly turned into the object of discussion of the general public, as they always been considered as a couple for years. Their marriage is famed for the short time they took to make the announcement, and the amount of attention it gained in the media.It also looked somewhat suspicious when Sharmila Tagore got married with Nawab Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi in 1969, among Bengalis. So much so, even though not entirely a Bengali wedding, given Sharmila’s origin it became one of the hottest topics. Their marriage was quite sensationally at the two unions of a Bollywood actress and a royal cricketer, because they belonged to two different faiths and had different lifestyle.These weddings because of consideration attention from media or some twists are always famous and memorable part of the Bengali wedding scenario. But they also tell the story of tradition, privacy and celebrity in the modern age also.
