Separated by a boundary of culture and tradition, Bengali weddings are always full of love and sentiment. The most famous and perhaps the most nationalized ever Bengali wedding for consideration is that of Rabindranath Tagore with Mrinalini Devi in 1883. Despite the fact that the marriage was an arranged one, the wedding of the Nobel laureate with his wife was in accordance with all the traditions of the 19th century elite Bengali families. Being a poet, philosopher and othermore an iconic figure in Bengal, Tagore’s marriage also became a matter of history as it preserved the amalgamation of modernity and tradition in Bengal.One more revolutionary wedding was that of Uttam Kumar, the popular actor of Bengali films and Gauri Debi . The marriage was very royal, the ceremony was witnessed by all the elite culture and politics of Bengal.

Uttam Kumar was known as the ‘Mahanayak’ or the Great Hero of Bengali cinema hence his marriage caught the eye of fans, the wedding of this couple served as a benchmark for what elitist Bengali wedding could be in mid twentieth century.In more recent time the wedding of the former Indian cricket captain, Sourav Ganguly to Dona Roy in 1997 set a standard. The first scene portrays the couple fleeing together owing to family disapproval, while the return of the family acceptance became a popular moment.

Sourav being a cricketer and a hero among the Bengalis the newly couple was able to portray a theme of love conquering all odds, love molded with tradition.These weddings being programmatic, publicized, and impactful not only have constructed the area of Bengali wedding but also have led to the construction of the overall Bengali specifics of love, tradition and modernity.
